Gearboxes

Gearboxes are also known as reductors or transmissions. They are used for different purposes such as: reducing speed, to increase torque and to get a good inertia match. Mostly the ratio is selected by the maximum motor speed divided by the max application speed.

All have their specific properties, advantages and disadvantages. Below you find a short overview.

Type Property Noise-level Advantages Disadvantages
Worm gearbox output shaft perpendicular to motor shaft low self-braking above 38:1 (can also be a disadvantage) low efficiency
Spur gearbox output parallel but not in line of motor shaft average price level, available ratios high efficiency low output torque
Planetary gearbox output shaft in line with motor shaft average high torque/volume ratio high efficiency length at large ratios
Right angle gearbox output shaft perpendicular tot motor shaft average compact design limited output torque

Wormgears - worm gearboxesWorm gearboxes

A typical characteristic of the worm gear is the smooth running. The zinc die-cast is designed for foot and flange mounting. The outputshaft has bearings on both sides.
The worm is hardened and grind, the wormwheel can be manufactured out of bronze or plastic. The lubricating guarantees a long lifetime at the rated torques.

The combination of a wormgearbox and permanent magnet DC motors, can be found in our stockprogram. They have standard dual output shafts. Single output shafts are possible.

There are several available sizes:

  • C32, C40, respectively up to 6,5 Nm and 15Nm. These can be build on to different brands of motors.
  • SG62, SG80, SG120, respectively up to 1,5 Nm, 4Nm and 15Nm. Specialy for Dunker motors.

Spurgears - spur gearboxSpur gearbox

Spur gears have a compact design and a high efficiency. The adhesive lubrication guarantees a high lifetime at the nominal torques stated.
The spurgear boxes from our stockprogram can be mounted on the permanent magnet DC motors and permanent Magnet Brushless DC motors.

Special attention must be given to the maximum allowable torque capacity of the gearboxes at higher reduction ratios. For the STG60 gearbox we can supply a watertight housing also protecting the motor.

Planetarygears - planetary gearboxPlanetary gearbox

Planetary gears are especially suitable for industrial applications where high torque is required. The planetary gears are lubricated with an adhesive grease. These gears make it possible to transmit high torque in a small volume. Self-centering planetary wheels guarantee a symmetrical distribution of power. The ring gearing also represents the gear casing.

Within our program range, planetary gearboxes are the most compact and highest loadable reduction heads.

The information below shows our standard program of small gearboxes and the more precise gearboxes from Gysin. Gearboxes for AC-Servo and Stepper motors, with a much higher torque range and lower backlash, can also be supplied. For these gearboxes we ask you to contact us with your specific requirements.
